June 11th is German Chocolate Cake Day, a chocoholic highlight. From scratch or store, baker or box, this luscious layered delight is the order of the day.
Lathered with sticky, gooey coconut and pecan frosting, German Chocolate Cake is not actually a German tradition at all. In fact, the first known recipe did not appear until the 1950s, when a Texas homemaker entered her original chocolate cake in a Dallas newspaper's baking contest. The recipe called for Baker's German's Sweet Chocolate, which was actually developed in 1852 by an Englishman named Samuel German, working for Walter Baker and Co.
A tradition was born. How about a delicious German Chocolate Cake today. After all, it IS German Chocolate Cake Day. Dig in!
