On June 11, 1959, U.S. Postmaster General Arthur E. Summerfield banned the shipment of D.H. Lawrence's racy romantic novel, Lady Chatterley's Lover. Thus began a heated censorship controversy. Branded obscene, the book had earlier been banned in New York City.
A court order lifted the postal ban by July 21st the same year.
June 11th has been dubbed Dirty Book Day ever since. (Just peek under some of those book covers on the beaches, if you need a clearer explanation.)
